Debrigarh Sanctuary is like an emerald fringed by the serene blue waters of the Hirakud reservoir.
Notified in 1985, it encompasses an area of 353 km2 comprising of Lohara and Debrigarh Reserve Forests, locally famous as the ‘Barapahad’ hills. Debrigarh means ‘Abode/Fort of the Goddess’
Location : In Bargarh district. Entry Point : Dhodrokusum (Zero Point) 25 km from Burla along Hirakud Dam right dyke.
Nearest city : Sambalpur, 40 km. Nearby towns : Burla (17 km), Bargarh (50 km)
Nearest airport : Bhubaneswar (380 km), Railway station : Hirakud (21 km), Sambalpur (40 km), Jharsuguda (90 km).

One of the most intact & undisturbed stretch of mixed dry deciduous forests in the state.

Debrigarh Sanctuary and adjoining Hirakud reservoir is home to:
• More than 250 species of flowering plants including several rare, endangered and threatened species like Cordia macleodii.
• 40 Species of mammals including fine populations of Indian Gaur and Chousingha.
• 242 Species of birds including species of migratory waterfowl.
• 41 Species of reptiles including Mugger Crocodile, Indian Rock Python and Banded Krait.
• 12 Species of amphibians including Indian Bull Frog and Marbled Balloon Frog.
• 42 Species of fish including the rare Mahanadi Mahseer.
• 205 Species of insects including butterflies & dragonflies.

#. Wildlife Management
In Debrigarh sanctuary, apart from protection measures by patrolling, we also actively practise the following wildlife habitat management measures to enhance the carrying capacity :
• Raising nursery and fodder plantation of about 15 fruit-bearing tree species.
• Creation of grasslands & meadow maintenance for existing grasslands.
• Improving water availability by digging waterbodies & constructing check-dams.
• Soil and moisture conservation measures like gully plugging and contour trenches.
• Creation of artificial saltlicks and maintenance of natural saltlicks.
• Fire prevention and control measures like fire-lines and fire breakers.
• Providing nest-boxes for hole-nesting birds and bird-baths during summer.
• Identification and preservation of unique and special habitats like riparian forests, caves, overhangs, snags, nesting sites etc.
