Pradeep Kumar Amat Elected as Speaker of Odisha Assembly
Bhubaneswar: 16th May 2017 (By Prasant Kumar Bhuyan) Senior leader of BJD and former Finance minister Pradeep Amat today assumed charge as the Speaker of Odisha Assembly after a formal announcement by deputy speaker Sanand Marandi following a voice vote in the House.“I will ensure a congenial environment for smooth functioning of the Assembly by maintaining a cordial relationship with all the members of the House”, Amat told newsmen soon after taking charge. Senior BJD leader and the former Finance, Health and Family Welfare Minister Pradeep Kumar Amat was elected as the new speaker of Odisha Assembly today. Amat who has prior experience in the post was elected unopposed. Name of Amat who held the post of speaker in his first term during 2009-2014 was brought in the House through a motion by Chief Minister Naveen Patanaik and was supported by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bikram Keshari Arukh. The election to the post of Speaker was necessitated following resignation of Niranjan Pujari during the recent ministry reshuffle. A motion of notice was moved by BJD yesterday before Assembly secretary to elect Amat for the top post. Following the notice, Later on Deputy Speaker of the House Sanand Marandi declared Amat as the new Speaker of the House. While Amat was elected unopposed, the opposition parties have dubbed the attitude of the ruling party as unfortunate as it did not feel the necessity of consulting with them on the candidature of the former Assembly speaker. “It had been better if the ruling party had discussed on the candidature of Amat with the opposition party. The act could have created a healthy democratic tradition as no rival candidate was given by us,” said Leader of Opposition Parties in the Assembly Narasingha Mishra. Senior BJP leader Kanak Bardhan Singhdeo however insisted that Amat being an experienced person and having a good rapport with most of the members in the Assembly would hopefully treat everyone equally during the session. Amat’s induction would be overall beneficial to the House, he added.Similary, a special meeting of the House was convened today and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik moved a resolution in this regard which was seconded by Parliamentary Affairs minister Bikram Arukh.A four-time legislator Amat had won from Boudh Assembly constituency in 2000 independently. Since then he had been elected to the House for three consecutive terms on BJD tickets. The veteran politician had held the Steel and Mines portfolio during the last part of Naveen’s second term between 2008 and 2009. Later on a voice vote was held in which Amat was elected unopposed. soon after taking charge as the Speaker Amat hoped that, He had again come back to the Cabinet with the most important portfolio-Finance department-after BJD regained power in 2014. Two years after, he was assigned additional charge of Health and Family welfare department after Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak resigned from the post all members would cooperate with him during his tenure and claimed that, he has good personal equation with a majority of members in the House.
