Bhubaneswar, May 15:(By Prasant Kumar Bhuyan)– BJD spokesperson and former minister Pratap Deb will file nomination for the election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Odisha today.  Scrutiny will be held tomorrow and candidates can withdraw on May 18. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) spokesperson Pratap Keshari Deb today filed his nomination for by-poll to the lone vacant Rajya Sabha (RS) seat from Odisha. Pratap Keshari Deb, the BJD nominee for by-election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Odisha, filed the nomination papers today.Deb filed his candidatures before the Returning Officer and Assembly Secretary Amiya Sarangi at around 12.30 pm in the presence of Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bikram Arukh and a host of Ministers and senior party leaders. Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik had declared Deb last week as the party candidate.Pratap Deb, an erstwhile royal family member, is currently chairman of the Odisha State Housing Board. He was minister for technical education and training and information technology in Naveen’s Cabinet between 2009 and 2014. Deb filed his nomination as BJD candidate before Assembly Secretary cum Returning Officer in the presence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and senior BJD leaders.“I would like to thank party president Naveen Patnaik for nominating me to Rajya Sabha. My priority will be to take up various problems I have been debating as a spokesperson in Odisha media. I will get a right platform to put those things in Rajya Sabha,” Deb said. The bye-election to the RS seat is scheduled to be held on May 25. The poll is slated for May 25.The election was necessitated following the resignation of Bishnu Charan Das on March 21. He lost the 2014 Assembly election from Aul constituency of Kendrapara. Deb’s victory is a foregone conclusion given the strength of BJD in the assembly. Meanwhile, former Finance minister Pradeep Amat will also file paper for the post of Assembly Speaker today. The BJD nominee is all set to win the seat since the ruling party has 117 MLAs in the 147-member assembly and the opposition has not fielded any candidate. Chief Minister Patnaik named the three-time former MLA from Aul in Kendrapara district and Biju Janata Dal spokesperson Pratap Keshari Deb (45) as his nominee to the Rajya Sabha. The by-poll was necessitated after the senior BJD leader Bishnu Charan Das was asked to resign in March mid-way through his term to become Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Board and convener of BJD’s SC cell. The Election Commission of India has fixed May 25 for the election. However, with the ruling BJD having the 117 strength of the 147 seats,
