Bhubaneswar, Dt. 8.5.2017-(By Prasant Kumar Bhuyan) -The Red Cross Movement is well recognized and respected for its largest humanitarian network and over 100 million members, volunteers and staff worldwide. It instills in them strong humanitarian values and the importance of service to mankind. Through its commitment to provide humanitarian assistance in various parts of the world, the Red Cross Societies reach out to millions of people each year, said Governor and President, Indian Red Cross Society, Odisha State Branch Dr. S.C. Jamir. Speaking in State Level Function of World Red Cross Day, Governor said, since its inception, eighty one years ago, the State Red Cross has stood with the people regardless of caste, religion and social status at any time and any place. The varied community service provided by the State Red cross is giving solace and joy to the less fortunate in our community. Whether it is taking care of physically challenged and elderly, providing rescue, relief and assistance to disaster victims, spearheading voluntary blood donation movement and collection or rendering first aid to injured persons during public gatherings, or imparting training on disaster preparedness, Red cross is making a real difference.As human beings, we all have a role to play in helping others in need, in our community and beyond. I would like to encourage all of you to play an active role in reaching out and helping the less fortunate in our community. Be it donating blood voluntarily and regularly and at the same time motivating others to do so. Considering the high demand for blood we need more blood collected voluntarily. Your contribution will certainly go a long way in helping to build a more caring and compassionate community, Governor added. Governor urged all to explore the volunteering opportunity by becoming part of the world’s largest humanitarian movement.Minister, Health & Family Welfare, Law and Chairman Working Committee of Odisha State Branch, Pratap Jena spoke about commendable work done by Red Cross in the State and called upon volunteers to follow in action the theme of this year, everywhere for everyone. Dr. Gyanabrata Mohanty, Honorary Secretary, IRC, State Branch, Major Dr. Kalpana Das,Youth Red Cross officer, Lady Vice President Prof. Asha Hans among others spoke on the occasion. State Level Award to YRC counselors and Governor’s Running Cup etc. were given to best performers. Lady Governor Alemla Jamir was present in the function. Koya and Bonda dance was presented by student volunteers.
