Bhubaneswar, 16th June,2016 – Marking the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the Nobel Prize Winner, who discovered the ABO blood group system, the World Blood Donor Day was celebrated by Indian Red Cross Society, State Branch in collaboration with Orissa State AIDS Control Society(OSACS), State Blood Transfusion Council(SBTC), District Red Cross Branch Khordha, Regional Red Cross Branch Commissionerate Police Bhubaneswar-Cuttack, Red Cross Blood Bank Capital Hospital Bhubaneswar, Red Cross Blood Bank BMC Hospital- Bhubaneswar & Central Red Cross Blood Bank Cuttack at Red Cross Bhavan Bhubaneswar. The theme of this year’s campaign was “Blood connects us all “.
Shri Debi Prasad Mishra, Hon’ble Minister, Industries, School & Mass Education, inaugurated the State level function as the Chief Guest and said that due to increase of population the requirement of blood is also increasing, so voluntary blood collection should be increased proportionately. He told that IRCS-OSB and other voluntary organizations are doing estimable job in mobilizing blood in the state. Community participation is vital for mobilization of blood.
Hon’ble MLA, Bhubaneswar-North Sj. Priyadarshi Mishra, Hon’ble MLA, Bhubaneswar-Central Sj. Bijay Mohanty & Director, SBTC Sri Gyanabrata Mohanty joined as the Guests of Honour in the function and focused on various initiatives taken by the Govt. in the state on blood sector.
Dr. Chakradhar Panda, Honorary Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, Odisha State Branch gave the welcome address & and thanked the unpaid voluntary blood donors for the noble cause of saving lives. He highlighted the benefits of blood donation and certain that Red Cross will continue the movement of voluntary blood collection and to achieve the requirement of the blood in the state and said it can only be possible with the support of all its stakeholders.
The programme was coordinated and vote of thanks offered by Dr. Major Kalpana Das, Youth Red Cross Officer, Odisha.
In the morning a Voluntary Blood Donation Camp was organized in association with Orissa Sai Charitable Trust at Red Cross Bhavan, Bhubaneswar where 39 units of blood collected. On this occasion 25 regular voluntary unpaid blood donors(one male, one female) from each Red Cross Blood Bank of the State, who has donated highest units of blood in the year 2014-15 were felicitated by the Chief Guest. Besides, a State level Quiz Competition was organized for Junior Red Cross and Youth Red Cross Volunteers on the theme of the day and the winners were also felicitated by the Chief Guest in the State Level function.
