Speech of Dr. S. C. Jamir, Governor of Odisha on the occasion of Golden Jubilee Function of Odisha Police High School, Tulasipur, Cuttack on 05.12.2015

Cuttack.05/12/2015: (Feature by Mano Mani Singh)I am delighted to be with you on this momentous occasion and participate in the Golden Jubilee celebration of Odisha Police High School, Cuttack. The celebrations of Golden Jubilee of any institution, is a great event in the history of that institution. Crossing a milestone of 50 years is a remarkable achievement of the school. It is an occasion of great joy. Today it is appropriate to remember all the committed endeavours towards shaping the school and taking it to the present height.
The school is exemplary in so many ways that it has every reason to look back on its 50 years with pride and satisfaction. In the span of fifty years the school has supported its students by providing them opportunities and challenges that have enabled them to inculcate in themselves values of concern, commitment and service, together with knowledge, intellect and understanding. The school is proud not only because of excellent academic results by students, but also because of talents and successes of students in other fields like art and culture, sports and games and Scouts and Guides, NCC and Red Cross. I congratulate Odisha Police High School for bringing out the best in its students and moulding them as useful citizens of tomorrow. As the school celebrates this remarkable milestone and renews its commitment through quality educational endeavours, I convey my warm felicitations to students both present and past, teachers, parents and to the State Police Department which had established and is managing the school.
School remains a special place in everyone’s life. It is here one learns. It is here one grows up and it is here the journey of life begins. School is the basic foundation of knowledge being imparted to a child. While the school’s first responsibility to its students may be academic, the job doesn’t end there. Gone are the days when school meant just learning the events given in a history chapter or solving tough mathematical problems or reciting poems. Now-a-days, school has become the first stepping stofle in the life of a child, wherein he/she learns a lot more than just rote learning. Developing hobbies, refining them, learning basic human values, getting skilled at multi-tasking, developing social skills are some of the many things that a school must equip a child with. The school’s efforts must be directed towards opening up students’ mind to a variety of ideas from science to literature — from art and culture to humanitarian service — ideas that will exercise, stimulate and expand their mind.
Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhiji had said, “Education is a search within, a guiding force which goes deep into the inner world of humanity eliminating all errors and shortcomings and bringing about purity and perfection of mankind simultaneously enkindling the spirit of creative and aesthetic efflorescence”. Real education should bring the best out of young minds. It should nurture the qualities of creativity, innovation and explore the inherent skills in the students. Our educational institutions should foster the spirit of creativeness in students. Ethics is the science of character. It is the knowledge imparted coupled with good conduct and character that will develop the students into good citizens of tomorrow, Today we are in knowledge driven society. Providing quality and value-based education is imperative.
Ours is a country with a huge youth population. Nearly 60 per cent of our nation’s population is below the age of 30 years. India is a vast reservoir of young, talented, human capital with huge brain power and manpower. Invoking a national aspiration is the need of the hour. Every student should not rest merely with acquiring disciplinary knowledge. Acquiring numerous skills, developing the spirit of competitiveness, innovation, commitment and dedication are necessary for making the 21st century that of ours. The education imparted should be aimed in this direction. We need a joint and concerted effort to revitalize the youth force towards this mission.

I am happy to see so many girls studying here. Educating a girl child is the need of the hour. In this competitive world woman has several roles to play in the society. Improving girls’ education has a clear impact on the health and economic future of young women, which in turn improves the prospects of the entire community.
Dear students, you should always aspire high in life. Convert your dreams into reality. The spirit of hard work, initiative, confidence and the determination to achieve will bring you success.
Let me say a few words to teachers. Teaching is a noble profession. Teaching is like dropping a pebble in a pond of water. You can immediately see ripples in that pond. The teacher’s work is completed in the classroom but what she or he communicates to the students goes beyond the classroom. Each student is unique and so the message portrayed to a large extent will also be unique. Therefore teachers should understand the responsibility. Enhancing competency and updating knowledge is imperative for teachers.
I believe, Odisha Police High School should continue to endeavour to delve deeper into the true purpose of education by giving its students opportunities and an environment that is positive, inspiring, challenging and stimulating. I wish students to follow their bliss and blaze new trails. I wish them all success. On this memorable occasion, I congratulate the school again on its remarkable achievements and wish the School to grow from strength to strength in the years to come. Jai Hind
